The most common type of shinkansen, N700

Shinkansen is the super express in Japan from 1964. It was the first train running at 210km/h (130mph) with passengers in the world. It run at 320km/h (200mph) from 2012. Yes, 320km/h is not so fast now as you see following table.

Of course we have another one. Top of the table, MAGLEV Shinkansen went at 500km/h (313mph) with passengers, without passengers 581km/h (361mph) on the test road and it is a Guinness book record. We are making new railroads for this. You can board it after 2027.

MAGLEV Shinkansen having the world record

Shinkansen is also very very famous for its safety and accuracy.

There is no death accident over 50 years!!!

Average delay / 1 train is 36sec even though we have 120,000 schedule/yr (333 schedule/day) including delay from weather (Data in 2013 from JR).
Every driver of shinkansen is educated to drive it within 5sec error on schedule and 1cm error to stop.
