OS of Shinkansen

It started with COMTRAC (COMputer aided TRAffic Control) at 1972.
“COMTRAC” is a real-time control system with automated route control for use on the Shinkansen lines. It was integrated control train system and managing traffic in a hierarchic way. It had parallel CPUs having the skill to ask each other.

It updated to COSMOS (
Computerized Safety, Maintenance and Operation Systems of Shinkansen) at 1995.
“COSMOS” was developed as a new total system for the Shinkansen operation. New functions include train operation and maintenance schedule creation, maintenance work execution management, maintenance car route control conventionally conducted by manual operations, and systemization of overall Shinkansen operations.

Latest one is SIRIUSSuper Intelligent Resource and Innovated Utility for Shinkansen Management)from 2004.

"SIRIUS" supervisory system for the Kyushu Shinkansen manages traffic, rolling stock, and other aspects of line operation.
To support through-trains running on both the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen railway lines, the system includes interconnections with the COMTRAC traffic management system. To provide the high level of reliability demanded by a Shinkansen system, the automatic route control equipment at the heart of the system features the new CF -I 000/F T fault-tolerant model with synchronization control of four-fold CPU redundancy at the OS level.

We had difficulties with the system capacities caused by a huge amount of passengers. We tried to increase the schedule of the train on the same line because we did not have enough resources, the place and money. Therefore, we could develop so maniac system that we could recover the delay or trouble on schedule immediately.
